THE SECOND APPROACH TO THE CRITERIA FOR PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

In this module we are still looking at criteria related to the impact on people and the environment but this time we are focused on specific doses to individuals, rather than release.

These criteria apply to any event resulting in an unplanned dose.

While the release criteria apply mainly, though not exclusively, to larger accidents from facilities, these criteria apply to all areas where INES is applicable.

To recap on what we have seen previously, see below examples of accidents and incidents where doses were received by individuals:

GoiĆ¢nia, BRAZIL, 1987

Four people died and six received doses of a few gray (Gy) from an abandoned, and ruptured, highly radioactive 137Cs source.

Fleurus, BELGIUM, 2006

Severe health effects for a worker at a commercial irradiation facility as a result of high doses of radiation.

Yanango, PERU, 1999

Incident with radiography source resulting in severe radiation burns.
